THE STORY.
It should have taken two minutes.
The narrator has one completely ordinary objective: pay a bill. He knows his username. He thinks he knows his password. He’s feeling confident.
Then three words destroy the plan:
“INCORRECT. PLEASE TRY AGAIN.”
That’s the starting gun.
What follows is less a password reset than an obstacle course. Was there a number? A capital letter? A symbol? The dog’s birthday? His mother’s maiden name?
Eventually he admits defeat and clicks the button nearly everyone has clicked:
“Forgot Your Password?”
But resetting it introduces an entirely new set of problems. Eight characters. Uppercase. Number. Symbol. And absolutely not something previously used.
Somehow, against the odds, inspiration strikes:
“Sunshine_Waffles_93!”
Victory. Almost.
The website has one more surprise: two-factor authentication. The phone is upstairs. Now a person who originally wanted to pay a bill is literally running through the house to satisfy a website’s security requirements.
Finally:
“SUCCESS! YOU ARE NOW LOGGED IN.”
The bill gets paid. The browser closes. Peace returns.
And then comes the inevitable final question:
Wait... what was that password?
The entire journey has brought the narrator directly back to where he started. Tomorrow, the cycle begins again.
